Chanakya Chanakya, also known as Kautilya, is the erudite hero of this story. He helped Chandragupta, the founder of the Mauryan dynasty, to secure the throne from the Nandas. Many scholars claim that Chandragupta’s success as a king was credited to Chanakya’s advice and guidance. Chanakya wrote the highly acclaimed and famous Sanskrit classic Arthashastra. According to him, a king, at the time of his coronation, had to take an oath of service to the people. If he misbehaved, his people had the right to remove and replace him. Kautilya’s Arthashastra is a book on public administration. It discusses the duties and rights of kings, ministers and other officers. It lays down guidelines on various affairs of the state, law, diplomacy, trade and commerce, war and peace, marriage and divorce and on military strategy. Till date, Arthashastra remains a classic textbook on political diplomacy and economic affairs. The story retold here is inspired by the 9th century AD classic Sanskrit play Mudra Rakshasam (The Signet Ring) written by Vishakhadatta. He hailed from Pataliputra which is believed to be modern-day Patna.
