There are three main methods of teaching reading

Using a controlled vocabulary in a series of graded steps, reading schemes offer a structured approach to teach a beginner reader.

Read with me adopts the Look-Say approach, introducing learners to the first 300 most frequently used words in the English Language (Key Words). Pronunciation and meaning are learned through gradual introduction and careful repetition. Key Words are always carried over to the next book in the series.

Say the Sounds is Ladybird’s Phonics reading scheme. It uses the sounds of letters to help your child ‘unlock’ the pronunciation of new words and will build on the confidence your child has gained from Read with me.

Most teachers use a mixture of methods to teach reading. Ladybird Reading Schemes provide these methods of learning to read, for use at home or in school.
