Birbal to the Rescue The wit and wisdom of Birbal had endeared him not only to Akbar, but also to a vast majority of the subjects of the Mughal Empire. He had the rare distinction of achieving immense popularity during his lifetime, next only to that of Akbar. His sharp intellect saw him rise to a prominent position as a minister in the court of Akbar. His phenomenal success made many courtiers jealous and, if popular accounts are to be believed, they were forever plotting against him. Birbal was a fair administrator, a brave soldier and, perhaps what pleased Akbar the most, a good jester. The fact that he was also a good poet is little known. He wrote under the pen name “Brahma’ and a collection of his poems is preserved in the Bharatpur Museum. Though popularly known as Birbal, his real name was Maheshdas. It is believed that he belonged to a poor Brahmin family of Trivikrampur (now known as Tikawanpuri, on the banks of River Yamuna. According to legend, even his death, while leading a large military expedition to Afghanistan, was a result of treachery. Akbar was so moved when he heard of Birbal’s death that he burst forth into a couplet and lamented, “Birbal, you never hurt the helpless. You always gave them whatever you had. I am helpless now and yet you have left nothing for me.” Akbar found in Birbal a true friend and sympathiser. This Amar Chitra Katha narrates some incidents of Birbal’s quick mindedness and sense of justice. In these stories, Birbal manages to procure a pot of wisdom for the king of Calyon, brings justice to poor widows, helps the court artist regain his confidence and reputation and displays charming lessons in tact and diplomacy.
