Chand Bibi The story of Chand Bibi is a example of all that is noble and brave in the human spirit. In the late 16th century, the Deccan was divided into many kingdoms. The historic kingdom of Ahmednagar was one of them rife with petty quarrels, jealousies and power struggles. Its ruler, Burhan-ul-Mulk, had ascended the throne with the help of Akbar. But he later spurned the great Mughal king and asserted his own independence. However, Burhan was too engrossed in personal pleasures to make a good ruler. When he died, he left behind a weak and divided kingdom. It was during this turbulent phase that Burhan-ul Mulk’s sister, Chand Bibi, entered the scene and went on to leave her indelible footprint on the history of India. She had been married to Ali Adil Shah of Bijapur, who died leaving her childless. She then returned to Ahmednagar to train her nephew Prince Bahadur in the ways of kingship. Her brother’s untimely death saw Chand Bibi take over the reins of government on behalf of Prince Bahadur. proving to be more than adept at the task.
