Noor Jahan Noor Jahan is one of the most fascinating figures of Mughal India. Her skills as an able administrator and shrewd staterwoman are legendary. King Jahangir’s confidence in his queen was so complete that she received courtiers and held discussions with them regarding the affairs of the state. Royal decrees carried her signature. Coins were struck in her name with the inscription: “By order of the King, Jahangir: Gold has a hundred splendours added to it by receiving the impression of the name of Noor Jahan, the Queen Begum As historian Mutamid Khan, a contemporary of Noor Jahan, observed: “Her authority reached such a peak that the king was such only in name.” Noor Jahan was famous not only for her expertise in governance, but also for her beauty and wisdom. She was an accomplished poet and was adept in embroidery. The fabrics and dresses designed by her dominated the world of fashion for many years together. She popularised the rose perfume invented by her mother. As Abdul Rashid observes, “Fact and fiction have woven a web of romance around this colourful personality. While this Amar Chitra Katha is based on popular legends showing Noor Jahan and Jahangir as childhood playmates, all available evidence suggests that they met much later at Meena Bazaar, the royal bazaar held annually in the palace of the Emperor.
